This post I originally sent to my vox blog quite some time ago(2007). I am „reposting“ just to check out the authoring software that I recently came across
and since I guess nobody ever read what I posted there, I don’t really think any harm will be done by stealing from myself a little ,)
Very recently(^H^H^H^H^H^H^H a long time ago) i was looking at a Screenshot of Windows 1.0 (which i never used). But something caught my eye:
The Screenshots included Notepad. The wonderful Microsoft Windows Text Editor we all love. And it kind of made me wonder:

Notepad was certainly an OK Text-Editor for the time Windows 1.0 was published, but…
So let’s see what changed until the next major releases: (Windows 3.X):

I’m gonna skip a few dozen years now, or to be more precise just a bit more than one dozen years and we finally reach:

Notepad Windows 7.
Granted, a few things changed and it can wrap ‚uber-long‘ lines now (since XP, I believe!!! But that’s about it. No line numbering, coloring or anything.
Dear Microsoft, would it be so hard to get one guy to put in some features into a program like this? Certainly seems so.
Let’s have a look at Sound Recorder’s evolution:
(1990)
(1995)
(2000)
(2001)
(2003)
Anybody beginning to see a pattern here? Providing some tools with your operating system is real nice, but why does it need to be stuff from 20 years ago? One would assume programming a simple text editor is not „rocket surgery“(sic!)? And with a release cycle like MS 1 guy could work for 3 years and get the end user a really decent tool. Everybody would be happy.
Granted I believe Sound Recorder can save to something else than wav nowadays and maybe paint can also save a few new formats. But seriously? The same GUI as 1990? Actually I need to cut MS some slack here, they really changed the GUI finally. After 20 years with Windows 7. …
Okay, enough with the ranting already…
